To achieve our goal of total commitment to accident-free projects, Scheck has implemented a comprehensive safety program. There are several key elements to our safety program:
Management Involvement
As stated earlier, the success of the Scheck safety program comes from the leadership of top management. The Owners and upper level managers at Scheck Industries lead and participate in the total safety effort to prevent workplace injuries.
Scheck Industries Safety Department
Staffed by a Risk Manager, a Safety Manager, and two other full fulltime safety professionals, as well as a staff of Site Safety Supervisors our safety department provides the procedures, training, field support and auditing required to meet the demands of our projects which are often located in hazardous areas.
Scheck Industries Safety Manual
Our safety manual originally compiled in 1984 has been constantly revised through the years to comply with OSHA and other government standards as well as customer and company needs and experiences. The manual contains the information, procedures, and forms that our managers and supervisors need to safely perform their work.
Safety Training
Each employee receives a copy of our Employee Safety Handbook and attends a general and site specific orientation on every project.
Our safety department conducts the specific training required when our workers are assigned to high risk projects due to toxics, flammables, confined spaces, high work or complex energy control situations.
Toolbox talks are conducted on all Scheck Industries jobsites at least weekly. During turnarounds and outages and on certain projects toolbox talks are conducted daily.
Our safety department conducts quarterly safety training sessions for all managers and supervisors. All supervisors have successfully completed the OSHA 10-hour program and are trained in first aid and CPR. Other training includes all elements of our safety manual as well as motivational and behavior modification techniques.
Pre-Job and Pre-Task Safety Analyses
Job Safety Analyses (JSA) are prepared for every project. These JSA’s are reviewed with the site supervisors to assure that they understand the hazards involved and our mitigation plans.
Our job supervisors start each shift everyday with a formal written Safe Work Plan (SWP). The SWP provides a documented record of our proactive approach to performing job tasks in the safety manner possible.
The work area, emergency numbers, and special procedures are logged in. Job hazards are identified and controls or safety precautions required are addressed. Then the job tasks and work to be performed is reviewed collectively by all employees assigned to that Supervisor and every worker on the crew signs the signature section.
Auditing
All supervisors are required to complete a formal safety audit on a weekly basis. It is expected that corrective actions will be taken immediately on all identified inadequacies or deficiencies.
Our safety department staff audits every project no matter how large or small. Our safety professionals audit work in progress, make a physical hazards inventory, and check on the completion of all expected safety documentation including safe work plans, toolbox talks, supervisor audits, lift inspections, etc. Training or retraining will be conducted if the audits determine this need. Audit findings are documented and reports are distributed to upper management.
Safety Incentive Programs
Scheck Industries has a formal safety incentive program to increase individual employee awareness of the safety program and to provide reinforcement for those workers who are accident free.
Supervisors can earn a monetary incentive based on their safety performance and this performance is heavily considered in their annual review.
Near Accident Program
Scheck Industries is committed to the prevention of harm to workers, damage to equipment, and loss of process. It is, therefore, necessary to address near accidents as if they were losses. We have a formal near accident procedure and require that all near accidents be investigated as if the potential loss occurred and that all mitigative actions are initiated.
As can be seen from the above, Scheck Industries has a complete safety program which is an integral part of our overall commitment to Safety, Quality, and Performance.
